New Zealand Super chief executive Matt Whineray is to step down at the end of the year.

Whineray has been with the sovereign wealth fund for 15 years, the last five as chief executive and before that as chief investment officer.

Whinerary succeeded Adrian Orr as chief executive after Orr was appointed governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

Chair of NZ Super’s board of guardians Catherine Drayton said Whineray’s legacy will be his commitment to high performance, to the organisation’s people and to sustainable investment.

NZ Super currently has around $NZ60 billion in funds under management and expects to double this figure over the next decade.

Drayton said Whineray had presided over significant growth in the fund, well in excess of its investment performance benchmarks.

Whineray said he would not be retiring but planned to take a break before deciding what to do next.
